Upgrade Your Breast Implant Warranty

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

breastMore often these days it seems like we are constantly being reminded that our assurance of protection from product failure is about to expire. This is no different than with medical devices. Recently the major breast implant manufacturers are offering enhanced warranties for their products. This upgrade is only available this year, however, time is running out to take advantage of the offer.

If a patient schedules a breast augmentation on or before December 31st they can qualify for the enhanced breast implant warranty. This warranty provides a $3500 in financial reimbursement in the event of an implant rupture or failure. Even if your implant fails ten years down the road, the manufacturer will help pay to cover the medical costs to fix the problem.

While these reimbursements warranties have always been in affect the potential for out of pocket expense for the patient can be expensive.

Those considering breast augmentation surgery may want to schedule their surgery now rather than later next year in order take advantage of this special offer. Implant failures are very rare, however, it’s a good way to have some extra assurance about the financial risks associated when an implant failure occurs.

Vaginal Makeovers – Worries Physicians

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

swimsuiteThere is growing concern about women who decide to undergo vaginal plastic surgery. Labiaplasty or labia reduction and other female cosmetic surgical procedures including, Vaginoplasty or tightening of the vagina and Clitoral Unhooding, are becoming more popular as they become accepted socially. Each year the cases of women undergoing this type of surgery is increasing.

This surgery is controversial in nature, however, it is booming in popularity nonetheless. Many surgeons fear that some women may be unnecessarily having this operation as well as concerns about this procedure being done by unqualified surgeons.

Labia surgery, which usually involves reducing the size of the labia and vaginal tightening, are becoming as common today as other cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation and abdominioplasty’s. Unfortunately, there is no long term safety studies and many doctors are worried about this procedures popularity. According to one physician, “The designer vagina craze is a concern because it often targets a women’s insecurities of their particular genital appearance rather than any specific health related issue.” “The surgery is potentially damaging and could possibly lead to further problems as a result of the surgery and not necessarily fixing the patient’s insecurity.”

In one practice they have seen an annual increase in requests for this type of surgery by 100%. However, 80% of the cases were requested purely for cosmetic reasons and not health related or functional reasons like not being able to run or wear certain clothing. Women cite two primary reasons whey they are deciding to have this type of surgery, 1) They can’t seem to get comfortable during sex and 2) They want to decrease their discomfort with a busy lifestyle.

It’s a lucrative field for some, however, surgeon’s skilled in these procedures are worried that some are not up to the task and risk potentially irreversibly harming patients.

A published research paper in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology questions the value of cosmetic female genitalia surgery, with concerns that many women are seeking the surgery without fully understanding the risks. Many medical experts are also questioning the ethics of the surgery.

Some physician’s feel that women are being exploited and that anyone performing these types of surgeries should certainly be well trained in the surgical techniques but also be trained in the ability to dissuade a woman from having it done if it’s not necessary. “The procedure itself needs to be scrutinized and the patient selection must be thoroughly assessed. In the right patient it will have the most benefit.”

The Facelift Procedure

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

face-lift-incisionsThe facelift also known as rhytidectomy can not prevent the aging process. However, it can help set back the aging clock by improving the visible signs of aging through the removal of excess skin, fat, tightening of the muscles, and repositioning the skin of the face and neck. A facelift can be performed alone, or in comination with other surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery, forehead lift, or a rhinoplasty.

If a person is considering a facelift, understanding the basic principles of the procedure can help them understand how it is performed, and the types of results they can expect to receive.

There are currently several different facelift procedures, including:

Total Facelift – Superficial Musculoaponeurotic Technique (SMAS). This technique focuses on the connective tissue or the superficial musculoaponeurotic structre of the face. The connective tissue is tightened with the outer surface of the skin becoming smoother and more youthful looking. It also has the benefit of not making the face look like it has been surgically tightened. It is also effective at getting rid of the deep creases around the nose and mouth or nasal labial folds.

Subperiosteal Facelift - Is known as giving patients the most lasting results. This technique tightens the deepest facial tissue and is done with an endoscope. However, this technique is also known for causing more facial bruising, swelling and a longer recovery time.

Deep Plane Facelift – This technique is the least invasive. It primarily adjusts the entire face and neck by lifting the facial tissue, skin and the underlying fat. This technique is performed quite frequently with exceptional results. However, the recovery time for this procedure can be quite long as well.

Mid Facelift – This technique is also referred to as the cheek lift because the procedure is focused primarily on the cheek areas, right below the eyes. This type of facelift is best for problem areas around the nasal labial folds and fat deposits that droop in the cheek area.

Thread Lift – This is one of the newest techniques and is known by a lot of different names, however, it’s long term effectiveness as a qualified procedure has yet to be determined. This procedure requires the surgeon to use barbed threads which are passed through the dermal layers of the skin and then cinched up near the ear. The tension of the barbed surgical threads then keep the facial tissue in place. Typically the results provide a smooth facial appearance.

CNN – Reports on the problems with cellulite. Many women suffer from the unsightly look of cellulite. According to researchers, cellulite has nothing to do with how fat or thin a woman may be, they are all susceptible to having cellulite.

Cellulite occurs after the skin loses it’s elasticity and large fat cells form and create bulges and dimples. As many as 90% of women have cellulite, however, there are a few things a woman can do to limit or decrease the appearance of cellulite. What Are The Top Surgical Anti-Aging Cosmetic Surgeries?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Over the years plastic surgery technology has evolved tremendously to help someone look and feel younger.

Many of these new technologies are less invasive and require less recovery time than before.

Here’s a look at a couple of the more popular anti-aging surgical techniques.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

forehead4BA brow lift is commonly requested to remove or improve the creases that stretch across the forehead and between the eyebrows – normally referred to as frown lines.  This procedure utilizes fiber-optic technology allowing the surgeon to perform this surgery without the need for large incisions.  An endoscope helps eliminate bruising, scarring, infection and eases in recovery post-operatively.

  • Over time the brow may change as a result of aging
  • Lifting the brow may remove excessive skin and fullness from the upper eyelids
  • It may also improve the symmetry of the eyebrows
  • Change the overall shape of the eyebrows
  • Helps remove wrinkles from off the brow

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

eyelids10BEyelid surgery is becoming one of the most requested surgeries today.  This procedure removes the loose skin (baggy eyes) that obscures the natural fold of the upper eyelids.

There are several surgical techniques for eyelid lifts:

Transcutaneous Eyelid Blepharoplasty – uses incision that goes through the crease of the upper eyelid skin.  Removing the excessive skin, muscle and fat will help give the eyes a more pleasing result.

Transconjunctival Eyelid Blepharoplasty – uses an incision in the inside of the eyelid where the fatty tissue is then removed.  No skin incision is made with the technique so consequently if there is excessive eyelid skin this would not be the best blepharoplasty of choice.

Transcutaneous Lower Eyelid Fat Lipolysis technique – lipolysis has gained popularity in recent years by injecting fat dissolving materials or inserting a electrolyzed specialized needle through the skin into the pocket of fat – dissolving it.

Facelift (Rhtidectomy)

facelift14BA facelift surgery is a procedure where a person receives the most visible surgical results.  Loose facial and neck skin are stretched or removed to produce a new youthful appearance.

For additional information about any of these procedures both Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park would be happy to consult with you.

Who’s Getting Facelifts?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

The idea that facelifts are for really old people is no longer the case.  People who’s skin has begun to droop and sag but who still have decent skin elasticity and good facial bone structure are opting to undergo minor facelift procedures.  About 90% of facelift patients are primarily women.  Regardless of the disproportionate differences of male to female facelift patients, the facelift is still one of the more popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures for both sexes.

Recent studies have shown the age percentages of people having facelifts are the following:

  • 1% for patients under the age of 35
  • 29% for patients between the ages of 35 through 50
  • 53% for patients between the ages of 51 through 64
  • 17% for patients 65 and older

There are things to consider before you have a facelift procedure.

It is important to know that people with good skin elasticity usually have better results than those that don’t.  While the natural tendency is for people to lose their skin elasticity as they age, there are many factors that can contribute to it’s acceleration, including;  smoking, drinking excessively and extreme exposures to the natural elements like sun and wind over the course of one’s life.

It is also important that a person who desires to have a facelift is in good health.  This will ensure they heal faster and have an easier time during their recovery.

A facelift can help you return to a more youthful appearance and it can also help you improve your self-confidence.

The draw back is that a facelift patient should have realistic expectations about their surgical outcomes before they undergo any surgery.

At Face & Body Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park can help you make an informed decision on whether a facelift would be best for you.  Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park have over 30 years combined experience with the latest facelift procedures and have perfected the Natural Uplift - facelift.  You can view many of their results by clicking on the following thumbnail.

Turning Back the Clock With a Mommy Makeover

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Many women who embarked upon working careers, before becoming mothers, are often faced with going back to work after childbirth.  For some, the need to regain their self confidence and appearance is important to them.  Childbirth can cause a wide range of changes to a woman’s body, which include a flabby tummy, visible stretch marks and increased weight gain.  A woman’s breasts can also be permanently changed as a result of childbirth, in some cases losing their perkiness and firmness altogether.

There are many surgical procedures that are available to turn back the clock and help a woman regain her pre-childbirth appearance.  This is known as a “Mommy Makover,” which include the following procedures:

abdominoplasty-3b

Tummy Tuck: A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes the excess skin and fat caused by muscle stretching and skin laxity as a result of childbirth.  A surgeon will carefully make an incision, usually below the bikini line, and cut away the excessive skin and fat.  They may also need to tighten up the abdomino-muscles with sutures as well as recreate the belly button since it is often removed in the procedure.  Recovery times can vary per person, however, expect at least a week or two down time with up to six weeks recover before feeling completely back to normal.  Women who are in a better physical condition usually have a shorter recovery time than those that don’t.  Click here to learn more about a tummy tuck abdominoplasty.

Liposuction: Liposuction is the process of using a small cannula, inserted past the dermis of the skin that sucks out and removes localized deposits of fat.

  • Tumescent Liposuction, uses large volumes of natural saline solution combined with diluted lidocaine and adrenaline which is injected into the fatty tissue.  The tumesent technique allows for a smaller cannula to remove the fat – and reduces the amount of bruising and bleeding.
  • Hydroliposculpture, uses a combination of fluid injection liposuction in conjunction with a specifically designed flexible ultrasonic cannula.  This type of procedure is most known for being the most gentle.  Unfortunately, many surgeons prefer not to use this method because it requires the use of two different liposuction systems simultaneously.
  • Ultrasonic Liposuction utilizes a high frequency vibrating cannula to loosen and melt the localized fat deposits.  First and second generation ultrasonic liposuction equipment suffered from producing too much heat as a result of inadequate cooling for the device.  This often resulted in “cooking” the surrounding tissue causing a whole host of problems including nerve damage.
  • Laser Assisted Liposuction, is the newest form of liposuction.  It uses a small focused laser with low energy waves to melt and break up the localized fat deposits.  This method  requires less recovery time for the patient and produces the smallest scar.

Dr. Park and Dr. Sorosky can help you determine what type of liposuction would be best for you.  To learn more about liposuction click here.

Breast Augmentation Results

Breast Augmentation: In some cases women may desire to have breast augmentation or a breast lift (mastopexy) with their Mommy Makover to regain their pre-childbirth figure. There are many options for women who desire breast augmentation.  Women have the option to request saline or silicone gel implants, size, shape, placement of the implant and even incision.  These choices are best saved after personal research and a consultation with your surgeon since every women is different with regards to her own body and personal goals.  To learn more about breast augmentation click here.

Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park are experts in Mommy Makeovers and would be happy to consult with you on your many options to achieve your goals.
