With the beginning of each new year many people make resolutions with regards to their appearance. If looking better is something you are concerned with then Botox Cosmetic might be the answer.

Botox Cosmetic is a medically diluted from botulinum toxin for the removal of facial wrinkles. This toxin originates from specific bacterium called Clostridum botulinum that is found in improperly handled meat products. However, Botox Cosmetic was originally approved by the FDA in 2002 for medical use. It is currently the most popular non-surgical procedure for the removal of facial wrinkles available today. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing nerves that control muscles – relaxing the appearance of wrinkles.

When Botox Cosmetic is administered by a licensed professional, it can have a positive effect on how you look. Botox treatments usually last around four to six months. However, there is a word of caution: Be wary of personal “Botox Parties” hosted in people’s homes. You should avoid these – don’t allow yourself to be practiced on by unlicensed individuals – there are considerable risks that can permanently harm you either through improper administration of this drug or with tainted botulinum toxin. Furthermore, with the success of Botox cosmetic comes the risk of illegal “Black Market Botox” becoming available without a prescription. Black market botulinum toxin is unsafe and potentially dangerous since the potency and authenticity is not approved by the FDA.

When the FDA first approved collagen for cosmetic use back in the early 80’s, people considering the treatment were hopeful about taking years off their appearances, however, many were scared about allergic reactions, painful injections, and swelling.

Fortunately, today people have a much greater variety of safe and effective dermal fillers to choose from. Facial fillers can be injected into the deep depressions that run from your nose to each side of your mouth or the nasal labial folds. Filling in these areas that have lost volume, such as thinning lips and those deep furrows that develop between the eyebrows. When someone has any of these areas injected, it can take many years off a persons face. The results may be so good that it can even allow someone time to postpone having cosmetic surgery in the future.

In an outpatient setting, all of these fillers can be used effectively with almost immediate results. Unfortunately, there is a downside, since fillers are only temporary, lasting anywhere from a few months to a year, and some patients have experienced some bruising and swelling.

So the question is: “Which one should someone use?”

The majority of the new facial dermal fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid, a natural occurring substance found in the human body.

Here is a list of five dermal fillers that are available from qualified practitioners:

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid based filler regarded as “the world’s best selling dermal filler.” It is used for correcting moderate facial wrinkles and folds.

Perlane – very similar to Restylane, it is designed primarily for treating deeper and more severe wrinkles and folds.

Radiesse – this thick compound is made with (natural, biocompatible) calcium based microspheres in water based gel.

Juvederm – Like Perlane, this popular filler is designed for treating deeper wrinkles and restoring volume to the face. It’s been referred as the “liquid facelift” treatment.

Evolence – one of the newest and best fillers on the market, Evolence is made with porcine collagen which has been purified. It helps create plumper cheeks and lips, and has a reputation for quick results and minimal bruising.

In a previous article, we discussed the increasing popularity of injections used to fill in various lines and wrinkles on the face. To review, the most common areas we inject filler materials is in the nasolabial folds, the marionette lines (around the mouth), and in the tear trough (groove below the bags under our eyes). The common substances we use are: Restylane, Juvederm, and Radiesse (please see our previous article for a review of the difference between these products).

Examples of using the injectable filler called Juvederm to fill sagging skin under the eyes. Click on image or thumbnail to advance to the next frame.

With the ever-increasing use of these products, the Dr. Robert H. Sorosky and Dr. Edward H. Park have been expanding the use of injections to various other parts of the body. Fillers are now used in other areas of the face such as in the prejowl area wrinkles around the chin. Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park have also been using the filler products to restore volume in the cheek to provide a cheek augmentation.

More recently, Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park have found the use of Restylane or Radiesse in the Inland Empire to be applicable for rhinoplasty patients. Patients who are seeking subtle changes in their nose may be a candidate for non-surgical rhinoplasty. For those patients seeking subtle refinements to slight tip asymmetries or to a slight curvature to the bridge of the nose, Restylane or Radiesse is a superb option for to avoid surgical rhinoplasty. Results are attainable within minutes and recovery is not more than a couple days. The procedure is temporary lasting 6 to 12 months or even longer.

Finally, Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park are now using Radiesse for hand rejuvenation. People who have noticed aging in their hands now have an option to rejuvenate the appearance of their hands. The back of our hands may lose volume over time creating areas of shallowness between the fingers. These areas can now be filled with Radiesse, and can even be combined with a light chemical peel to tighten the skin and remove discolorations on the back of the hand.

Feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sorosky or Dr. Park to learn more details about the use of Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm.

All of us have noticed wrinkles develop over time as a result of the aging process. There are many products on the market that are utilized to fill in these natural lines. Some products last longer than others, and all of them have specific risks and benefits. Gaining some knowledge on these products will allow you to make an informed decision as to what filler may work best for you. Here is some general information on the most popular products on the market today.

Restylane is a dermal filler made of a natural substance hyaluronic acid found in the human body. It has been used since 1996 and has been very safe without the need for a skin test. Restylane lasts approximately 4 to 6 months in areas around the mouth and is also being used in areas under the lower lid which may last for 1 to 2 years!

Juvederm is a newer generation cosmetic facial filler that is reported to have a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid with a smoother less viscous formula. It is used to fill in wrinkle lines around the mouth as well as in the lower lid. It also may last up to 6 months.

Radiesse is a dermal filler that is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. The microspheres are gradually absorbed by the body, as the body’s collagen grows into the scaffold. Radiesse is best used in the nasolabial folds and can last up to 1 yr. or longer.

Artefill is another new injectable filler recently approved by the FDA and is the first non-resorbable wrinkle filler for the correction of smile lines. The PMMA microspheres are non-resorbable thus providing permanent support for a reported 5 years or longer. As it is mixed with purified bovine collagen, a skin test is necessary to screen for an allergic response.

All of the above injectable fillers are reportedly safe and approved by the FDA. With all of the above fillers, there may be mild swelling or reddening at the treatment site which usually resolves within 1 to 3 days.

Feel free to schedule an appointment with Dr. Sorsoky or Dr. Park to ask them about their experience using these products.
