Plastic Surgery Obsession the Results of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

CNN reports that obsession with plastic surgery is a result of body dysmorphic disorder.

Learn more about how some people are obsessed with excessive plastic surgery in this video.

Get the latest Flash Player to see this player.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a chronic mental illness where someone is fixated on a presumed flaw in their physical appearance. It is also known as dysmorphophobia. To the person with BDD, their appearance seems so bad that they become extremely distressed over their imagined ugliness and don’t want to be seen by anyone.

When a person has body dysmorphic disorder they obsessively worry over their appearance and body image, sometimes staring at themselves in the mirror hours at a time. They also seek out using cosmetic surgery, sometimes excessively, to try to fix any perceived flaws but are rarely ever satisfied with their new appearance.

There are many symptoms to BDD which include the following:

  • Fixated on your physical appearance
  • A belief that you have an abnormality or defect in your physical appearance.
  • You believe yourself to be ugly.
  • Constant self-examining in the mirror or avoiding looking in the mirror altogether
  • Feeling that others negatively take specific notice to your appearance
  • Constant cosmetic procedures without any satisfaction
  • Constant grooming
  • Insecurity and self-conscious of themselves
  • Not wanting their picture taken
  • Continual picking of the skin
  • Continual comparing of appearance with others
  • Avoiding social engagements
  • Wearing too much makeup or using clothes to cover up perceived flaws

Some of the body parts that BDD sufferers obsess about include:

  • Skin
  • Nose
  • Hair
  • Skin Blemishes
  • Baldness
  • Breasts
  • Genitalia

When a person feels embarrassed or shame about their appearance it may be a good time to seek treatment for BDD. Mental health providers and health professionals are available to help with this condition. BDD rarely gets better by itself, and as people age their perceived ugliness only gets worse. If left untreated it could lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior.

Most experts do not fully know what causes BDD, however, biochemical, genes and environment may play a part in this illness. Researchers have identified developing trigger points which include:

  • Having a relative with BDD
  • Excessive teasing as a child
  • Sexual and Physical Abuse
  • Very low self-esteem
  • Social pressures on perceived beauty

It is roughly estimated that approximately one percent of the entire population to have some form of BDD. However, as many as ten percent of those seeking cosmetic treatments may have BDD as well. BDD usually begins in abdolescence and demographically affects both women and men equally.

The complications that can arise as a result of BDD include:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Mood swings and depression
  • Continual Anxiety
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Anorexia/Bulimia/Binge Eating
  • Phobias around people
  • Drug/Alcohol abuse
  • Very Low self-esteem
  • Isolation
  • Poor attendance at work and school
  • Few close relationships
  • Unnecessary medical and cosmetic surgery procedures
  • Solitude Confinement

A person who seeks out a mental health provider for help with BDD will often be asked with the following questions:

  • When did you first discover your symptoms?
  • How is your daily life affected by this condition?
  • How much time in a day to you spend thinking about your appearance?
  • What other cosmetic treatments have you had in the past to treat your condition?
  • What have you done on your own to make you feel better about your appearance?
  • What types of things make you feel worse about your appearance?
  • Have others that know you well commented on your behavior or moods?
  • Have you had anyone else in your family that has had a similar illness?
  • What do you hope to gain from treatment?
  • Are their any medications or non-prescription supplements that are taken for your condition?

Treatments for BDD include psychotherapy and mediations. While cosmetic surgery may be a procedural fix for a perceived flaw it rarely fixes the distress of BDD. The results may not meet the expectation of the person. After which they may begin obsessing about another aspect of their appearance and seek out additional cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgery, at best, only temporarily fixes the way people view themselves and is not a permanent treatment for BDD.

Proposed Botax Gets the Ax

Tanning salons to get taxed

Tanning salons to get taxed

After reeling from the backlash of angry constituents, congress has decided to ax portions of the health care bill that would tax elective cosmetic surgical procedures. Senate Democrats pulled the proposed 5% tax from the latest draft of the bill over the weekend.

Clearly this new form of taxation is discriminatory against women in general who use elective procedures to enhance their appearances and does nothing to reduce health care costs. Typically, elective cosmetic procedures are paid out of pocket and not insurance.

In place of the botax a new tanning tax was added that would go in affect in July of 2010. Anyone receiving services from tanning salons would be left with the bill. This new tax would affect over 20,000 tanning salons across the nation and which only represents less than 1% of 871 billion cost of the health care bill over a ten year period.

These types of bills raise serious concerns that other health care related services could be taxed in the future.

Surgeon Medical Certifications Ensures Safety for the Patient

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

With the recent news of the Argentine model who died while undergoing a cosmetic procedure, highlights some of the risks associated with these procedures. Though extremely rare, complications can arise. This unfortunate situation reinforces the need for patients seeking cosmetic procedures to carefully select their surgeon as well as the operatory facility where their procedure is performed. Patients who shop around and make their decision on price alone or who are persuaded by aggressive advertising campaigns regarding the latest techniques may be placing their appearance and health in jeopardy.

It is important that any cosmetic or plastic surgeon is certified in the field in which they are performing procedures. Equally important is that office based operatory facilities should have the highest level of certification from their state, and that the physician anesthesiologist are qualified to assure maximum patient safety during surgery. At Face and Body Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Edward Park is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and Dr. Robert Sorosky is certified with the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Combined they have over 40 years of aesthetic surgical experience. To request a free consultation and learn more about Dr. Park and Dr. Sorosky contact Face and Body Cosmetic Surgery today.

Your Mother’s Daughter…at least around the eyes.

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

eyesA recent study by surgeons at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, was presented at the annual American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s convention in Seattle. The study examined faces of mothers and their daughters. It found that the faces of the daughters were beginning to show signs of aging like wrinkles, thinning, and the loss of elasticity around the eyes in exactly the same way their mothers’ faces aged. The effects became more noticeable after the daughters reached their mid 30′s.

The study was the first to scientifically prove that women age just like their mothers. Until now, studies of aging of the face have mostly been subjective.

The study consisted of ten mother and daughter pairs that looked very similar and ranged in age from 15 to 90 years of age. Using 3D facial computer imaging the researchers were able to map out the most pronounced similarities of sagging eyelids and volume loss of facial fat that occurred around the tear ducts and the lower eyelids. These areas are most responsible for the loss of elasticity and slumping of muscles in the face as people age.

The loss of skin elasticity results in drooping folds in the upper eyelids and pronounced creases under the eyes. According to one researcher, women when they age, their faces are more noticeable because they change from an oval shape to a square as the skin sags. Men’s faces, on the other hand, tend to be consistently square throughout their lifetime.

Based upon this research, surgeon’s can use this information to aid in cosmetic surgery on the eyes. Eye surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPA) eyelid surgery was the fourth most common plastic surgery operation in 2008.

One of the authors of the study, Dr Subhas Gupta, said, “Knowing exactly how a woman’s lower eyelids will change with age can help surgeons plan a surgical “correction” that will prevent the changes seen in her mother.”

What Are The Top Surgical Anti-Aging Cosmetic Surgeries?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Over the years plastic surgery technology has evolved tremendously to help someone look and feel younger.

Many of these new technologies are less invasive and require less recovery time than before.

Here’s a look at a couple of the more popular anti-aging surgical techniques.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

forehead4BA brow lift is commonly requested to remove or improve the creases that stretch across the forehead and between the eyebrows – normally referred to as frown lines.  This procedure utilizes fiber-optic technology allowing the surgeon to perform this surgery without the need for large incisions.  An endoscope helps eliminate bruising, scarring, infection and eases in recovery post-operatively.

  • Over time the brow may change as a result of aging
  • Lifting the brow may remove excessive skin and fullness from the upper eyelids
  • It may also improve the symmetry of the eyebrows
  • Change the overall shape of the eyebrows
  • Helps remove wrinkles from off the brow

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

eyelids10BEyelid surgery is becoming one of the most requested surgeries today.  This procedure removes the loose skin (baggy eyes) that obscures the natural fold of the upper eyelids.

There are several surgical techniques for eyelid lifts:

Transcutaneous Eyelid Blepharoplasty – uses incision that goes through the crease of the upper eyelid skin.  Removing the excessive skin, muscle and fat will help give the eyes a more pleasing result.

Transconjunctival Eyelid Blepharoplasty – uses an incision in the inside of the eyelid where the fatty tissue is then removed.  No skin incision is made with the technique so consequently if there is excessive eyelid skin this would not be the best blepharoplasty of choice.

Transcutaneous Lower Eyelid Fat Lipolysis technique – lipolysis has gained popularity in recent years by injecting fat dissolving materials or inserting a electrolyzed specialized needle through the skin into the pocket of fat – dissolving it.

Facelift (Rhtidectomy)

facelift14BA facelift surgery is a procedure where a person receives the most visible surgical results.  Loose facial and neck skin are stretched or removed to produce a new youthful appearance.

For additional information about any of these procedures both Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park would be happy to consult with you.

Who’s Getting Facelifts?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

The idea that facelifts are for really old people is no longer the case.  People who’s skin has begun to droop and sag but who still have decent skin elasticity and good facial bone structure are opting to undergo minor facelift procedures.  About 90% of facelift patients are primarily women.  Regardless of the disproportionate differences of male to female facelift patients, the facelift is still one of the more popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures for both sexes.

Recent studies have shown the age percentages of people having facelifts are the following:

  • 1% for patients under the age of 35
  • 29% for patients between the ages of 35 through 50
  • 53% for patients between the ages of 51 through 64
  • 17% for patients 65 and older

There are things to consider before you have a facelift procedure.

It is important to know that people with good skin elasticity usually have better results than those that don’t.  While the natural tendency is for people to lose their skin elasticity as they age, there are many factors that can contribute to it’s acceleration, including;  smoking, drinking excessively and extreme exposures to the natural elements like sun and wind over the course of one’s life.

It is also important that a person who desires to have a facelift is in good health.  This will ensure they heal faster and have an easier time during their recovery.

A facelift can help you return to a more youthful appearance and it can also help you improve your self-confidence.

The draw back is that a facelift patient should have realistic expectations about their surgical outcomes before they undergo any surgery.

At Face & Body Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park can help you make an informed decision on whether a facelift would be best for you.  Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park have over 30 years combined experience with the latest facelift procedures and have perfected the Natural Uplift - facelift.  You can view many of their results by clicking on the following thumbnail.

Turning Back the Clock With a Mommy Makeover

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Many women who embarked upon working careers, before becoming mothers, are often faced with going back to work after childbirth.  For some, the need to regain their self confidence and appearance is important to them.  Childbirth can cause a wide range of changes to a woman’s body, which include a flabby tummy, visible stretch marks and increased weight gain.  A woman’s breasts can also be permanently changed as a result of childbirth, in some cases losing their perkiness and firmness altogether.

There are many surgical procedures that are available to turn back the clock and help a woman regain her pre-childbirth appearance.  This is known as a “Mommy Makover,” which include the following procedures:

abdominoplasty-3b

Tummy Tuck Results Photo

Tummy Tuck: A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that removes the excess skin and fat caused by muscle stretching and skin laxity as a result of childbirth.  A surgeon will carefully make an incision, usually below the bikini line, and cut away the excessive skin and fat.  They may also need to tighten up the abdomino-muscles with sutures as well as recreate the belly button since it is often removed in the procedure.  Recovery times can vary per person, however, expect at least a week or two down time with up to six weeks recover before feeling completely back to normal.  Women who are in a better physical condition usually have a shorter recovery time than those that don’t.  Click here to learn more about a tummy tuck abdominoplasty.

Liposuction: Liposuction is the process of using a small cannula, inserted past the dermis of the skin that sucks out and removes localized deposits of fat.

  • Tumescent Liposuction, uses large volumes of natural saline solution combined with diluted lidocaine and adrenaline which is injected into the fatty tissue.  The tumesent technique allows for a smaller cannula to remove the fat – and reduces the amount of bruising and bleeding.
  • Hydroliposculpture, uses a combination of fluid injection liposuction in conjunction with a specifically designed flexible ultrasonic cannula.  This type of procedure is most known for being the most gentle.  Unfortunately, many surgeons prefer not to use this method because it requires the use of two different liposuction systems simultaneously.
  • Ultrasonic Liposuction utilizes a high frequency vibrating cannula to loosen and melt the localized fat deposits.  First and second generation ultrasonic liposuction equipment suffered from producing too much heat as a result of inadequate cooling for the device.  This often resulted in “cooking” the surrounding tissue causing a whole host of problems including nerve damage.
  • Laser Assisted Liposuction, is the newest form of liposuction.  It uses a small focused laser with low energy waves to melt and break up the localized fat deposits.  This method  requires less recovery time for the patient and produces the smallest scar.

Dr. Park and Dr. Sorosky can help you determine what type of liposuction would be best for you.  To learn more about liposuction click here.

Breast Augmentation Results

Breast Augmentation: In some cases women may desire to have breast augmentation or a breast lift (mastopexy) with their Mommy Makover to regain their pre-childbirth figure. There are many options for women who desire breast augmentation.  Women have the option to request saline or silicone gel implants, size, shape, placement of the implant and even incision.  These choices are best saved after personal research and a consultation with your surgeon since every women is different with regards to her own body and personal goals.  To learn more about breast augmentation click here.

Dr. Sorosky and Dr. Park are experts in Mommy Makeovers and would be happy to consult with you on your many options to achieve your goals.

Post-Bariatric Cosmetic Plastic Surgery – Inland Empire

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Dr. Park recently wrote an article for the March 2009 issue of Rancho Specialty Hospital – Weight Option News.

Congratulations and welcome to your renewed life! This is a long and arduous journey that you have undertaken, and now is the time to reap your rewards. You are now at a point where you are losing weight, or you have reached your final weight goal. Your health and energy has improved, and you are now ready to restore your body image. Part of losing weight is regaining your confidence and self-esteem, and a lot of this relies on your own body image. My goal as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon is to help you achieve this by performing surgery that will remove all of the excess skin on your body and re-contouring your new body. This is the next step in completing your renewed image. The first step in the process is to make sure that you are first and foremost a healthy candidate. You should also be at a stable goal weight for at least 3 months. Once these goals are achieved, we can plan to address the various areas of your body. As a result of weight loss, you will have lost fat in all areas of the body, including your face, and there are areas of overhanging skin. In the initial consultation, I will take a complete approach and evaluate all areas from head to toe.

These areas include the face/neck, arms, breasts/chest, abdomen, inner and outer thighs, and the back/buttocks. Some people will not need all of these areas addressed, whereas others will have a complete makeover. The safest approach is to stage the surgeries. In this manner, you and I will plan which areas to address, and I will generally perform two to three areas of surgery at one time. For example, I will commonly perform a breast lift with implants and combine this with an abdominoplasty in stage I. After 2 to 3 months is allowed for you to recover, we can then proceed with stage II. Sometimes a third stage is necessary to complete the body contouring. The whole process of post-weight reduction surgery can be completed in 3 to 6 months. Generally, recovery is not that painful, and as an example, I will encourage you to walk with assistance the very next day. All in all, I would like to say that this will be one of the most gratifying chapters of your life. You have worked so hard at losing your weight; you deserve to reward yourself by renewing your body.

What’s Hot? – Natural Facelifts. What’s Not? – Tight Facelifts.

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Recently an article in New York Magazine called a more natural-looking rejuvenation a new beauty aesthetic and dubbed it the “new new face.” Facial skin pulled tight over the skull is over. Replacing it with a more plumper, softer face is what’s hot now. This is not unlike a stylish older sofa that looks almost new if only you keep the cushions fluffed.

Using a combination of new techniques and technologies, patients can have a newly restored face that takes years off the aging process. With the combination of facial fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse and in combination with Botox injections and non-surgical laser treatments a patient can expect to receive exceptional results.

To lean more about these procedures contact Dr. Robert Sorosky and Dr. Edward Park today at the Face & Body Cosmetic Surgery Center. They are conveniently located in the heart of the Inland Empire in Upland, California.
