Breast downsizing or breast revisions are becoming more and more popular. Many stars have been leading this charge as they are exchanging their large breast implants for more natural looking implants.
One of the primary reasons for this is that these women feel that their overly-large augmented breasts do not properly fit their body proportions and it makes them look awkward and fake. Some women with excessive large implants had begun to avoid wearing tight tops because it emphasized their breast implants which had become an embarrassment for them.
In the beginning most women like their large augmented breast, however, over a period of years the overly large breasts can begin to form ptosis – a condition where the breast will point downward – especially if they are not properly suspended with a good support bra. Other women with older breast implants using saline will wish to exchange their breast implants with silicone implants which feel more natural and hold their shape better than saline implants. Silicone breast implants have been proven safe for use in breast augmentations and have a longer life-span than earlier versions of breast implants with their no-leak cohesive gels.
Breast revision surgery is usually not any more complicated than the original breast augmentation surgery – consisting of a straight breast implant replacement procedure. However, if there is extensive damage to the breast pocket, excessive skin stretching, lowering of the inframammary fold, symmastia, and or capsular contracture, then additional surgery to the breast is required. Your plastic surgeon should provide you with a comprehensive breast revision process prior to surgery.
Combined procedures would include, a mastopexy (breast augmentation with lift), added structural support to the breast pocket using Stratice tissue matrix support, suturing the breast pocket and or breast implant to repair misalignment.
Some of the more common reason for beast revision include:
- Capsular contracture – a hardened shell that forms over the breast implant from calcified scar tissue that distorts the breast shape.
- Breast Implant Displacement – some breast implants are anatomically designed and can flip or misalign from the breast pocket.
- Implant Rippling – typical of saline implants
- Breast Implant Rupturing – Can be caused by impact trauma tot he breast.
Breast manufactures typically warrant breast implants at about 10 years for certain situations, and in some cases offer a replacement policy depending upon the conditions, these would include Mentor, Allergan and Sientra brands breast implants.
