When the FDA first approved collagen for cosmetic use back in the early 80’s, people considering the treatment were hopeful about taking years off their appearances, however, many were scared about allergic reactions, painful injections, and swelling.
Fortunately, today people have a much greater variety of safe and effective dermal fillers to choose from. Facial fillers can be injected into the deep depressions that run from your nose to each side of your mouth or the nasal labial folds. Filling in these areas that have lost volume, such as thinning lips and those deep furrows that develop between the eyebrows. When someone has any of these areas injected, it can take many years off a persons face. The results may be so good that it can even allow someone time to postpone having cosmetic surgery in the future.
In an outpatient setting, all of these fillers can be used effectively with almost immediate results. Unfortunately, there is a downside, since fillers are only temporary, lasting anywhere from a few months to a year, and some patients have experienced some bruising and swelling.
So the question is: “Which one should someone use?”
The majority of the new facial dermal fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid, a natural occurring substance found in the human body.
Here is a list of five dermal fillers that are available from qualified practitioners:
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid based filler regarded as “the world’s best selling dermal filler.” It is used for correcting moderate facial wrinkles and folds.
Perlane – very similar to Restylane, it is designed primarily for treating deeper and more severe wrinkles and folds.
Radiesse – this thick compound is made with (natural, biocompatible) calcium based microspheres in water based gel.
Juvederm – Like Perlane, this popular filler is designed for treating deeper wrinkles and restoring volume to the face. It’s been referred as the “liquid facelift” treatment.
Evolence – one of the newest and best fillers on the market, Evolence is made with porcine collagen which has been purified. It helps create plumper cheeks and lips, and has a reputation for quick results and minimal bruising.
