Male Breast Reduction – Gynecomastia Procedure
Men with enlarged breast often feel very insecure about their bodies and especially when not wearing a shirt in public. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately half of all men have excess localized fat and or excess glandular tissue on their breast.
Research has been unable to locate the exact triggers or causes of enlarged male breasts, however, one study in Turkey reported that phthalates may be to blame for enlarged breasts in pubescent boys.
Currently, there are several surgical procedures available to men who have enlarged breast and who wish to reduce the size of their breasts. These includes, liposuction and glandular tissue abatement. Both procedures have proven effective in male breast reduction, however, removal of the breast gland has proven to be the most effective overall.
Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed as an out-patient procedure with an operatory time of around an hour. However, in some cases it may take longer.
Risks involved with male breast reduction include:
- Swelling
- Some Scarring
- Some Bleeding
- Mild pain and discomfort
- Infection
Recovery from surgery usually requires two days of down time, if needed, with back to work within a week.
