Breast Revision Surgery is designed to correct unsatisfactory breast augmentation outcomes. These unsatisfactory outcomes are usually a result of certain conditions like:
- Capsular Contracture
- Problems resulting from Anatomical Breast Implants
- Ruptured Breast Implants
- Breast Deformity from Double-Bubble or high-riding implants
- Breast Implants Bottoming Out
- Implant size adjustment
Each on of these conditions are unique unto themselves but understanding the causes will help in determining the correct surgical remedy.
Capsular Contracture is a condition where the body’s immune system encases the breast implant in a fiberous “capsule” which can distort the breast implant and deform the shape of the breast. It can also cause pain and discomfort.
Anatomical Breast Implants are designed to be shaped like the natural sloping of a woman’s breast. Unfortunately, this type of breast implant can move or become dislodged distorting the breast’s appearance.
Ruptured Implants will leak and often completely deflate causing deformities to the breast. Breast implant ruptures can occur in both saline and silicone implants, however, it is more common in textured saline breast implants. The newer cohesive silicone gel implants, (Gummy Bear Implants), will not leak and continue to hold their shape, even in the event of a rupture.
The Double-Bubble Effect can happen as a result of a loss of breast volume from weight loss or where the placement of the implant was originally set too high. This can give a “Snoopy Dog” look of the breast with the nipple facing downwards.
The Bottoming-Out Effect can occur when the breast implant moves down exceeding past the inframmary fold. This distorts the natural breast appearance. The primary cause for this problem is when the original surgeon lowered the inframmary fold in combination with gravitational forces causing the breast implant to slip.
Implant Size Adjustments are usually requested for a desire to be larger or smaller. However, 90% of women who undergo breast revision surgery do so to become larger.
