Breast Revision

Refine or correct previous breast surgeries with our specialized breast revision procedures.

Breast surgery can present significant challenges, especially in secondary and tertiary revision cases where patients have undergone multiple prior surgeries. Over time, some individuals may encounter issues such as breast tissue thinning, excessive scarring, implant malposition, capsular contracture, or implant rupture. Dr. Park employs innovative techniques that combine breast reconstruction and enhancement to address both primary breast concerns and secondary cases resulting from multiple prior surgeries.

Breast augmentation, as time goes by, may lead to certain conditions that necessitate a secondary breast revision or reoperation. These conditions may include capsular contracture, breast implant malposition, implant rupture, the "bottoming out" syndrome (where the breast implant shifts below the inframammary fold), extreme breast sagging (ptosis), or simply a desire for a change of appearance.

Notably, women who undergo breast augmentation may experience capsular contracture at some point. While the exact cause remains unclear, there is a strong indication that infection may play a role. Malposition of the breast implant can result from improper surgical placement during the initial procedure or due to issues with anatomically correct implants shifting from their original location.

In every case, breast implant deflation necessitates breast revision surgery. Breast implant deflation can result from various factors, including:

Breast Implant Age: Breast implants typically have a lifespan of around 10 years, after which they may naturally wear out and deflate.

Breast Implant Trauma: Excessive pressure or impact on the breast can cause implant ruptures.

Breast Implant Wear and Tear: Sometimes, sutures placed in contact with the implant can prematurely wear it out.

Overfilling/Underfilling Breast Implant Capacity: Filling an implant beyond or below the manufacturer's recommended capacity can lead to early implant failure.

Although deflation of newer breast implants is relatively rare, some manufacturers may offer warranties for a specified number of years. It's advisable to check with your surgeon if your implants are covered by such a warranty.

"Bottoming out" occurs when the inframammary fold loses its attachment to the chest wall, causing the implant to descend below the breast's natural boundaries. Factors such as skin laxity can contribute to this condition, as well as previous attempts by the surgeon to adjust the inframammary fold. Over time, very large breast implants may lead to ptosis (breast sagging) in some women, prompting them to consider a breast lift. Skin laxity and gravity are the primary culprits in this condition.

For some women, their motivation for breast revision surgery is simply to change the appearance of their breasts. Whether desiring a larger or smaller size, breast revision surgery provides an option to achieve the desired look.

Addressing any of these conditions typically requires breast revision correction surgery. This process involves removing the compromised breast implant and/or augmentation and replacing it with a new breast implant. In some instances, the surgeon may recommend the removal and replacement of both implants. Occasionally, a woman may opt to remove the implant entirely, and during the revision surgery, a breast lift may be performed. Other possibilities include combining a breast lift (Mastopexy) with a breast augmentation to correct sagging or ptosis that may have developed since the initial breast augmentation.

Wondering about breast revision surgery?

Here's what you can typically anticipate:

Anesthesia: In most cases, breast revision surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia.

Incisions: Whenever applicable, your surgeon may utilize the original scars from previous procedures as incision points.

Implant Replacement: During the procedure, one implant may be removed and replaced. The decision to replace both breast implants depends on factors like the age and condition of the original implants.

Curious about the recovery process after breast revision surgery?

Here's what you can typically anticipate:

Less Traumatic: Breast revision surgery is generally less taxing on the body compared to the initial breast augmentation procedure, resulting in reduced pain and a quicker recovery.

Return to Normal Activities: Some patients may find themselves back at work and resuming their regular activities within just one week.

Complete Recovery: While the initial return to work is swift, complete recovery usually takes approximately three to four weeks.

It's important to note that breast implant manufacturers like Mentor and Allergan offer limited lifetime warranties on many of their breast implants. These warranties may cover a portion of the revision surgery costs related to breast implant failure or deflation, but patients may still be responsible for a portion of these expenses.
